Should you happen to be in town during the second weekend of September, you will be in for a treat. During the Open Monumentendag event, numerous historic monuments all over the city (and about 5,000 in the country), open up at no charge to the public, who can walk around and get a feel of the Dutch heritage on their own. Most of these venues are open on other days as well, but for a fee, though some are accessible only at this time of the year. The aim is to cultivate an interest in the history of the place, and each year has a different theme, complete with music, food and festivities at the sites. A list of the open structures is available at the Leidsplein Amsterdam Uitburo office, though it is entirely in Dutch. But fear not - look for a huge, yellow-and-blue Open Monumentdag flag with its trademark key symbol flying atop participating buildings and walk in!
