Starting as one of the founding members of Spacemen 3 in the 1980s, Peter Kember (aka Sonic Boom) has remained one of the most influential and prominent figures of the neo-psychedelia and space rock scenes of the past 25 years. When Spacemen 3 split in 1991, Kember and the group's co-founder, Jason Pierce, would go on to form Spectrum and Spiritualized, respectively. Though both were heavily-steeped in the annals of rock and psychedelia, Pierce would eventually give way to some more orchestral and pop influences, whereas Kember focused on shoegaze-style guitar and vintage synthesizer assaults with his Spectrum project. The band's neo-psychedelia filtered through 1960s garage rock sound has resonated with a fresh crop of popular modern musicians, including Panda Bear from Animal Collective, who handpicked Spectrum to perform at the All Tomorrow's Parties showcase the band was curating in 2011.
