Best known for her work with the British downtempo group Zero 7, Sophie Barker is a singer/songwriter and guitarist who captured her own alternative soft rock sound as a solo artist. After leaving school and signing with Sony Records in 1996, she formed a duo with Kate Holmes called Sirenes, shortly before starting a working relationship with Zero 7 in the late 1990s. She would go on to co-write several songs for the band, including one of its most renowned hits, "Destiny," from the 2001 album Simple Things. Leaving the chill-wave sound behind, Barker released her debut solo album Earthbound, in 2005, with an alternative singer/songwriter sound that has been likened to Mazzy Star.
