Dirk Powell is a highly accomplished American fiddler, banjo player, and singer known for his expertise in traditional Appalachian fiddle and banjo styles. Born into a family with deep Kentucky roots, Powell has made Louisiana his home since 1992 and operates his own recording studio, the Cypress House, in Breaux Bridge. With his studio's focus on vintage gear and audio, Powell has established himself as a skilled recording engineer and producer. He has received four Grammy Awards and has made appearances on popular American television shows. For a decade, he served as Joan Baez's band member and was a long-time member of the Cajun band Balfa Toujours. Currently, Powell performs as a solo artist, collaborates with various musicians, and tours with acclaimed artists like Mary Chapin Carpenter. He has recorded with renowned musicians such as Rhiannon Giddens, Loretta Lynn, and Eric Clapton, further solidifying his reputation in the music industry. Powell has also contributed to film soundtracks and scored multiple movies, including Cold Mountain and Ride with the Devil. With a discography spanning several notable albums, Powell continues to captivate audiences with his exceptional talent and passion for preserving traditional American music.
