Defining itself with accessible avant-garde sensibilities, Stereolab managed to build a dedicated and cult-like following among music aficionados throughout the 1990s and 2000s. Pulling inspiration from surrealist and situationist artistic movements, the group would go on to represent a certain type of intellectually-driven music that catered to a certain type of person who'd appreciate the slightly dada-like sonic tapestries Stereolab created. Though the group announced an indefinite hiatus in 2009, it reunited in 2019 for multiple live performances.
