Temple of the Dog is a project conceived by Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell after his good friend and leader of the pioneering grunge band Malfunkshun, Andrew Wood, died. Cornell wrote songs as a means of tribute to his late friend and enlisted a cast of musicians from the Seattle area to fill out the band's roster, including Pearl Jam vocalist Eddie Vedder. The collection of songs was recorded in a remarkable 15 day time span and released as an eponymously-titled album. Though the group only existed momentarily, from 1990 to 1992, Temple of the Dog has effectively reunited on occasion to play a few songs, more often than not including the group's well known staple, "Hunger Strike." Though the group would go on to reunite for a successful tour in 2016, Chris Cornell was found dead in a hotel room after a Soundgarden show in May 2017.
