Just like his son Jeff, who would follow in his footsteps decades later, Tim Buckley was a free-spirited singer/songwriter whose immense talent was taken away at a tragically young age. Born in 1947 and raised on a musical diet of country and progressive jazz, he began to teach himself the banjo at the age of just 13. Soon, it became apparent that his voice was a unique instrument and he started writing songs that would take advantage of his quavering and melancholic multi-octave range. By the mid-1960s, Buckley was releasing critically-lauded solo albums that got progressively more and more experimental as they went along. What started as a relatively straightforward folk career soon gave way to the freewheeling spirit of the times, as he began to explore psychedelia, avant-garde jazz and soul music, often to great effect. Buckley died of a drug overdose in 1975. He was only 28 years-old and would never fully come to know his son Jeff, whose own career and life trajectory would soon eerily mimic his father's.
