Written by James Goldman in 1966, The Lion in Winter is a critically-acclaimed Broadway play that depicts a Christmas gathering held at England's King Henry II French château during the 12th century. Goldman's play imagines the intrigue that could have come about during this fateful time in England's history through detailing the less-than-amicable relationships between the King, his family and their guest, King Phillip II of France. Although the events that occur in the play are fictional, the events that result from the characters' actions in the play are largely factual.
