Ormonde's two members, Robert Gomez and Anna-Lynne Williams, met without any preconceived notions of working with one another. They met after both arriving in Denton, Texas in 2008 to record parts for a collaborative album between baroque pop songwriter John Grant and indie-folk outfit, Midlake. Eventually getting around to listening to each others' respective solo material, Gomez and Williams decided to form a project based around haunting vocals and bare-bones folk. The duo rented a house in the desert town of Marfa, Texas to write and record the handful of songs that would make-up Ormonde's debut LP. The desolate, empty space of the desert surroundings permeates the sparse and simplistic feel found throughout the group's music.
