John Logan's gripping drama Red explores the dilemma between commercial success and artistic merit with stunning style. The play takes place in 1958, when abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko was commissioned to paint a mural for a newly developed building on Park Avenue in New York City. Rothko's artistic demons rear their heads as he attempts to maintain his integrity in the face of such a lucrative and mainstream transaction. This two-character drama premiered in London in 2009, wowing audiences as an explosively composed parable of the artist's legacy and the burden of the monetary valuation of art.
