The Day of the Panagia, also known as the Feast of Dormition, is the date in the Greek Orthodox calendar where the devout believe that Mary ascended into Heaven. After fasting for fourteen days, on August 15th churches throughout the country celebrate with feasts, celebrations and offerings custom of tradition that can take the form of property, food or livestock. Traditionally on this day Greeks return to their home town or go on a pilgrimage to a church.
