The tradition of Carnival is alive and well in Warsaw. For the 40 days before the somber Polish Lent, the party and celebration never end. The carnival takes place during the dark dreary days of winter providing welcome relief from the harsh winter. The festivities range from private parties in homes to celebrations held in hotels and nightclubs and include dancing, feasting (particularly on pączki [doughnuts]) and general debauchery. The party ends on Ash Wednesday.
