Dido and Aeneas is a three act opera that was written by the English baroque composer Henry Purcell with a libretto by Nahum Tate. Premiering at Josias Priest's girls' school in London, in 1688, Dido and Aeneas has since grown to be regarded as one of Purcell's more artistic works. Based on Book IV of Virgil's Aeneid, the opera recounts the tragic love story of Dido, the queen of Carthage, who fell in love with Trojan warrior-hero Aeneas.
