The festival usually (but not always) begins with a raucous parade and includes an entire day devoted to the gods of steel drums, rum and reggae. The downtown lunch hour parties tempt office dwellers to exchange their power ties for Rasta caps. The main event is the Part on the Plaza held at the Olympic Plaza, which draws huge crowds hoping that the music, spicy food and Caribbean arts and crafts will make them forget about Calgary's legendary cold temperatures. Most of the events are free.
