About The African-American History & Philip Simmons House Tour is an exploration of Charleston's 350 year old African community.
Our experience starts at the Philip Simmons House where one of the greatest African-American blacksmith artists of the 20th century created a lifetime of beauty. Led by museum docents, witness the humble life of the great Charleston artisan Philip Simmons. As part of the museum tour, meet Carlton Simmons, Philip Simmons nephew who continues the Simmons legacy today. See how the metal gates of Charleston were made, view the current works on display, and ask questions to a great Charleston artist.
We continue our experience by walking down America Street, the center of Charleston’s African-American community. Along the way, learn about and witness the trials and tribulations of the past and present. Highlights include Hampstead Park, Hammons and Alston's House of the Future, and Hammons America Street Billboard.
Next, we visit the grounds of St. John's Chapel, one of the oldest Churches in Charleston. Learn the history of the church itself and how religion played an important role in the African-American community both before and after slavery was abolished.
Last, we turn back toward the museum and visit locally owned shops along the way. Talk with local community members whose families have been in Charleston for generations.
Join us for an exploration, an awakening, and an empowerment trip through time in Charleston's African American community.

Additional Information - This is a linear walking tour. - We begin the tour at the Philip Simmons House, and we end the tour at the New Tabernacle Fourth Baptist Church. - Free street parking on the right side of Blake Street next to Trident Technical College.
