US Premiere of Catarina and the Beauty of Killing FascistsInternational Theater by Tiago Rodrigues (Portugal)July 4 & 5, 7 pm, PS21 Pavilion TheaterIn Catarina and the Beauty of Killing Fascists, by Tiago Rodrigues, playwright/director and current Director of Festival d’Avignon, a Portuguese family annually commemorates the murder of activist Catarina Eufémia during the Salazar dictatorship by killing a fascist. But this year, the young woman chosen to carry out the ritual refuses: Can violence lead to justice? What if the killing isn’t an act of resistance, but merely a crime?“The world of fiction, in which I still believe as a theater artist, allows certain things that aren’t possible in politics. Like this completely absurd and truly awful question, “Should the fascist be killed or not?” Only the theater can create a context in which that question exists.”Copresented with Festival Trans AmériquesABOUT THE ARTISTTiago Rodrigues Portuguese actor, director, playwright and producer. He is the current Director of Festival d’Avignon, in France. Since he started as an actor 20 years ago, Tiago Rodrigues has always looked at the theater as a human assembly: a place where people meet, as if in a café , to confront their thoughts and share their time. His work has been recognized for his gift for dismantling the borders between the theater and different realities, challenging our perception of social and historical phenomena. Throughout his career, Tiago Rodrigues has become a builder of bridges between cities and countries and an advocate of a living theater.
