The Joffrey Ballet is a dance company based in Chicago that has generally been considered to be the Midwestern United States' premier ballet organization since its formation in 1956. Although the ballet is best known for its performances of classical ballet works such as Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker and Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet, the Joffrey Ballet has historically strove to balance out its repertoire by including pioneering works of modern dance. Now considered to be one of America's most treasured dance companies, the Joffrey Ballet became the subject of Robert Altman's penultimate 2003 film, The Company.
