As with many Catholic celebrations, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception is considered a holy day and honors the pure and sinless Mary, Mother of Christ, with attendance at mass and the placement of flowers at Mary's statues located around the city. There is an evening torchlight procession of fir and broomwood called the 'river of fire'. This tradition has its roots in pre-Christian days in the worship of light, originally honoring the Winter Solstice.
