Cécile McLorin Salvant
University of Denver - Newman Center - Gates Concert Hall
Cécile McLorin Salvant is a jazz vocalist from Miami, FL who began singing with the Miami Choral Society at the age of 8, though it wasn't until she moved to France for school that she fronted her first band. While studying political science as well as classical and baroque vocals, she was mentored by musician Jean-François Bonne, who taught her about improvisation with a repertoire of music spanning as far back as 1910. After playing a series of shows around Paris, she recorded her debut album, Cécile in 2009, and has since gone on to build a reputation as one of modern jazz music's preeminent voices.
