The nagoni is a string instrument that calls the lush land of Western Africa home. The closest Westernized instrument that the nagoni can be compared to is the banjo. There are very few instrumentalists that are adept at playing the nagoni - thus making the ones that can properly play the unique African instrument rare and almost impossible to find. Because of the few and far between number of accomplished nagoni players walking this earth, Bassekou Kouyate sticks out. He can finagle and play the instrument with stunning grace and when he brings his instrument's unique sound to a group of other adept musicians, his tones add layers and layers of afro-centric sounds.
