MC Lyte is a female rapper from New York City who gained fame in the late-1980s for breaking down gender barriers and being one of the first solo female hip-hop artists to release a full album. Raised in Brooklyn, MC Lyte was exposed to music at a young age and began crafting her rhyming style by age 12. Though she recorded her first song "I Cram to Understand U (Sam)" in 1986, she released her first LP, Lyte as a Rock, in 1988, to critical laudation and commercial success.
