The super lo-fi indie rock projects Dirty Beaches and Last Lizard are the work of one man, Alex Zhang Hungtai. Born in Taiwan, Hungtai would proceed to bounce around all over North America, at different points calling Honolulu, Vancouver, Toronto and now Montreal, home. His music with Dirty Beaches is gritty and abrasive in tone, if not in its essence. Legit, structurally-sound songs are buried beneath a haze of clunky, lo-fi noise, forcing the listener to be patient and open-minded in embracing the contrast Hungtai seems to be aiming for. This could be easier said than done, however, as some will no doubt find Dirty Beaches' music to be too psychedelic and strange to dive into. Fans of oddball pop, however, will appreciate Hungtai's adherence to his unique vision and sound. In 2015, Hungtai retired the name Dirty Beaches and began to release music under this given name.
