The Bahamas celebrates its independence from England on July 10th beginning with a military parades and music at Nassau's Government House. The Junkanoo Parade follows with up to 5000 participants dressed in brightly colored masks and elaborate costumes (many are works of art); this parade closely resembles Mardi Gras. Originally Junkanoo was held during Christmas when the slaves were freed for three days. The slaves took up their handmade instruments; cowbells drums and whistles and donned hand-painted masks to dance through the streets. The point is to make as much noise and have as much fun as possible. What better way to celebrate freedom?
