From its start in the early stages of the riot grrrl movement, to its eventual widespread success all over the world, Sleater-Kinney was one of the most important female rock groups of all-time. The three-piece's most identifiable lineup consisted of Corin Tucker (guitar/vocals), Carrie Brownstein (guitar/vocals) and Janet Weiss (drums), all of whom have gone on to continued success after the group's demise. Sleater-Kinney formed in Olympia, Washington in 1994, after its members came together via a mutual passion for punk rock, feminist ideals and left-leaning politics. The group soon after relocated to Portland, where it would find its eventual success. Albums such as Dig Me Out and One Beat, both released on indie label stalwart Kill Rock Stars, showed the group's ability to merge the early riot grrrl aggression of its early days with well-executed indie rock and relatively catchy hooks. Sleater-Kinney went on indefinite hiatus in 2005 after the release of its excellent final album, The Woods. Since then, Tucker has started a solo project, Weiss joined up with Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks and Brownstein has explored opportunities in television and journalism.
