The tradition of Running of the Bulls has its roots deep within the history of the Basque region. Known locally as El Encierro, this popular event involves the often dangerous combination of angry bulls and courageous amateurs in the streets. The city comes alive with cheers when the bulls are released into the small, winding streets. Those runners who don't move fast enough had better find their way out of the path of the bulls, who sometimes become distracted by the crowd and turn on the spectators. After the race is completed, a professional bullfight takes place in the afternoon, accompanied by festivals of food and drink. The entire thrilling event draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to the area each year.
