The "Sagra della Granocchia" started in 1977, the year in which the Pro-loco di Capanne was formed. It is one of the oldest festivals of its kind in Umbria. Granocchia (a type of frog) was used as a source of food at the beginning of the 20th Century, when poverty and hunger were rife. There were many frogs in Capanne: the marshy plain around the Caina river and served as an alternative to vegetables! The peasants went out at night with small lamps to hunt frogs, as they remain immobile under a spotlight. The "Sagra della Granocchia" was created to celebrate traditional values and flavors of another time. This festival's menu is rich in local specialties. It is important to remember that some types of pasta such as umbricelli are rigorously handmade, and so is the famous cake typical of this region. It is cooked on the moment and is cooked in the traditional method over hot coal and ash. First courses are served at the tables straight from the saucepan at this festival.
