Carnival is always celebrated the weekend before Ash Wednesday. This festival was recently reinstated, with colorful imagination on the part of the disguised paraders and all the people who participate in the festival. After the public announcement and commencement, which the Town Hall usually assigns to some well-known figure, several days of partying follow in all of the city's neighborhoods, and the celebrations often include some big-name acts. The festival ends with the "Burial of the Sardine", a spectacular show put on by a business contracted by the Town Hall. The townspeople burn the large paper sardine in the area of the Barco Pasaje and throw it into the Tajo (Tagus) River. It is a colorful and fun celebration.
