Heldenplatz, Vienna, 1010
The Heldenplatz or Heroes' Square is noted worldwide as the site at which Hitler declared, in 1938, the annexation or Anschluss of Austria to the German Reich. Built during the reign of Emperor Francis Joseph, the plaza features the equestrian statues of heroic military figures - Prince Eugène of Savoy and Archduke Karl. Forming the outer plaza of the Hofburg, the sheer grandeur of the site makes for an excellent photo opp and even more after dark with the illuminated Neue Burg section. The square is often host to various cultural events and festivals throughout the year. From Heldenplatz, access two of Vienna's finest city parks - the Volksgarten and the Burggarten as well.
