These fortifications were built in 1590 in accordance with plans by the Italian architect Bernardo Buontalenti. After being severely damaged in the Second World War, one portion of the installation was made into a public park, and the other into an exhibition centre. Behind the wall lies the 17th century area of the harbour, known as 'New Venice.'
