The Porta Pretoria which is flanked by two towers was the main gate to the former Roman town of Augusta Praetoria. The gate dates back to the year 25 BC, the year in which Aosta was founded. The double walls contain three barrel vaulted gateways. The northern part of the structure has been incorporated into the castle of the Signori di Sant'Orso. The well preserved tower was not used for purpose of defence but as living accommodation.
