The town was founded in 1220 during the period of Communal administration and has preserved intact its Old Town core, a medieval complex encircled by town walls and moats. Towers and four town gates decorated with frescoes and arranged according to the four points of the compass embellish the defensive wall. Be sure to see the Piazza Pierobon with its Neoclassical cathedral as well as the Old Town's main streets, the Via Roma, Via Garibaldi and Via Marconi.
