The gigantic rocks through which the River Var has made its way appear inhospitable. It is thought that the Romans already settled in the deep picturesque gorge. Entrevaux was established at the beginning of the 10th century on the right riverbank. In the year 1690 the military architect, Vauban, made the town impregnable. On the orders of King Louis XIV the impressive citadel was built high up on the rock with only a steep heavily guarded path for access.
