TOURIST ATTRACTIONS & SIGHTSEEING, PRACTICAL INFORMATION
Established in 1083, the Shrewsbury Abbey was formerly a Benedictine monastery built by Siward. After changing hands several times over the centuries, the Shrewsbury Abbey slowly began to show signs of decline due to neglect and reconstruction and fortification of abbey buildings during political turmoil regarding the abbey in the 15th and 16th century. Now still showcasing an historic refectory pulpit, an incomplete organ dating back to the early 20th century and a public cemetery, the church is still active and is known for its choir since the mid-19th century. Whether you want to be a part of a welcoming religious community, check out elements of pre-medieval architecture or simply catch a glimpse of a slice of local history, then Shrewsbury Abbey is the place to be.
