The Rhea County Courthouse was the venue of the very well known Scopes Trial in 1925 that saw a school teacher being charged for including Darwin's Theory of Evolution in his lessons in a public school. A National Historic Landmark, the court has been restored to the way it looked during the trial and the basement has a museum with memorabilia from the trial. Additionally, reenactments of the trail during the Scopes Festival attract a lot of visitors.
