Kahurangi National Park, Nelson, 7073
Rightly christened ‘Kahurangi’, which, in Maori, translates to ‘treasured possession’, this national park is characterized by dazzling greens of the forest and pristine blues of the beach. From its northwestern perch on South Island, this entrancing park percolates immense natural beauty to its surrounding environs. A canvas of transcendental wilderness, here is where an undulating rugged topography is permeated with a wonderful nexus of winding trails, especially the Heaphy Track. Steadfastly upheld by New Zealand’s Department of Conservation, the national park bears in its verdant heartland a wealth of tropical palm forests, cavernous coves, and carpets of coastal woodlands which seemingly fade into eternity. Characterized by trickling rivers and soaring high plateaus, the national park also carries within it traces of the ancient Maori legacy. Clasped by the firm embrace of mist-cloaked peaks, this national park plays host to many outdoor activities like tramping, hiking and caving, among others.
