This is one of the old four entrances to the city and was constructed in 1617. Substantial renovation work was done to each of the main gates in 1789, and for the Butcher's Gate this meant the removal of defensive towers and a guardhouse stationed overlooking the ramparts. It was completely rebuilt and renovated some years later in 1810. Then in 1865, the walls along this section and subsequently the gate itself were doubled in height. From the top of the gate at this section of the walls there is an impressive sweeping view of the Bogside and the city's hilly western outlying areas. Its name derived from a slaughter-house that used to be located nearby.
