Always important to the commercial heart of the city, Shipquay Gate was the entry point for many important supplies; and provisions were passed to and from the boats that at one time docked directly outside the city's walls. On the left of the gate is the Cornucopia, a symbol of wealth and abundance, on the right Caduceus, the rod of Mercury best known as the symbol of medicine but also, as in this case, the symbol of trade and commerce. Today, Shipquay Gate is the busiest of the seven gates of the city in terms of people passing through it.
