Meppen has been in existence since at least the 8th century, more or less. As a result, it has a pretty rich historic legacy that is evident in the structures throughout the city, from small houses to churches such as the Priory Church of St. Vitus. Another notable structure is the Herrenmuhle or the water mill on the banks of the Nordradde. Meppen Theatre Group's months long performances around town is equally fascinating for any visitor. Exhibition Centre for the Archaeology of the Emsland, the Town Museum and the Koppelschleuse street's art exhibitions covers various aspects of the town's history and cultural heritage.
