The city first rose to prominence during the 19th Century, having thrived as a coal-mining center and a rail hub. It is known today as a thriving city which also preserves aspects of its past - from landmarks like Schloss Beck, to numerous churches that dot its scenic Altstadt. Bottrop is also notable for being home to the Alpincenter, which is deemed as one of the largest indoor ski slopes in the world.
