Covering nearly 9,000 acres (3,642 hectares), Highlands Hammock State Park is best known for its series of hammocks, which are small hills on which hardwood grows. There is much to see at this park, which opened in the 1930s and is one of Florida's original state recreation areas. Hardwood forests and nine nature trails offer a great opportunity to spot Florida wildlife, including otters and the occasional bear or panther. Visitors also enjoy camping, guided tours and other activities.
