Built in 1800 and recently renovated, The Gainsborough is named after the artist, whose portrait of the Duchess of Richmond hangs in the living room. The hotel is within easy reach of central London, and within walking distance of the museums of South Kensington, the Royal Albert Hall and Hyde Park. The staff is friendly, and there is a comfortable and stylish bar (called Picasso, appropriately enough), restaurant (breakfast only), coffee shop and a nightclub next door. Altogether, a fine and discreet establishment.
