The Green is Aberdeen's ancient marketplace, and the original center of the Burgh. Excavations in recent years have uncovered over one hundred skeletons, and the site is thought to have been home to a Carmelite friary and burial ground in the 12th Century. Outdoor markets have been held here since the Middle Ages. Friday was traditionally the day on which country people came to sell fresh produce to the "townees", beneath the "Mannie Well" (a historic monument which once stood here and which has now been returned to the Castlegate). The cobbled square is still home to various stallholders, selling locally produced plants, flowers, fruit and vegetables on Fridays and Saturdays. The Green takes its name from the Gaelic "grianan", meaning "a sunny spot".
