Slea Head Drive, Fahan, Ventry, V92 YKP5
This Iron Age promontory fort is particularly impressive. It was well built for defense with a massive dry-stone wall nearly 150 feet in length, a series of four earthen rings, and an underground escape route (souterrain) by the main entrance. This imposing entrance has a twenty foot long passageway that is roofed by large lintel stones. Sentry chambers within the walls offered further protection. In a west side chamber, a horizontal shaft must have held a heavy wooden beam at one time that blocked access if the outer door had been breached. There is also the remains of a house inside the fort which was round on the outside, but square on the inside.
