The Óbuda Island, also known as the Hajógyári Island, is the largest island on the River Danube. The island first formed from the silt and rocks carried by the river and was inhabited off and on from 89 BCE when it was the base for a legion of Ancient Romans. Today, the island is renowned all over the world for the week-long Sziget Festival which has been held here on an annual basis since 1993. During the festival famous musicians from across the world meet and exchange the gift of music.
