The Fort Carré is built on the tip of a peninsula in Antibes on a plot of land that was the site of both Pre-Christian and Christian worship. In 1550, in response to the destruction of Antibes twice by the troops of Charles V, Henri II ordered the construction of defensive fortifications on the site. The four pointed bastions surrounding the round central amphitheater were completed in 1565. The fort was bought by the municipality of Antibes Juan-les-Pins in 1997 and public tours are now conducted daily, except Sundays.
