Located on a scenic stretch of land on River Dommel's east bank, the Van Abbemuseum is a longstanding powerhouse of contemporary art. This labyrinthine museum was founded and built in 1936 by local cigar manufacturer and art lover Henri van Abbe in collaboration with the Eindhoven city council. While the original building of the museum is an imposing structure carved out of red stone, a much younger wing was built in its shadow. The newer wing is an impressive structure in Lapland grey stone that mirrors the striking modernity of its art collection. Bathed in natural light that filters in through the museum's glass windows, the museum is privy to a collection of nearly 2700 works of priceless art featuring monumental art stalwarts like El Lissitzky, Pablo Picasso and Wassily Kandinsky.
