ACT, Australia
A unique spectacle of modernist design and exceptional urban planning, Australia's capital city is the only one in the Federation to be formed after the establishment of the nation, in 1913. Canberra was constructed from the ground up after the site was chosen as the capital of the newly formed nation in 1908, and is independent of any Australian state. The inspired design was envisaged by the husband and wife duo Walter Burley and Marion Mahony Griffin; an urban oasis influenced by the Arts & Crafts and Green City Movements, incorporating rich pockets of greenery amid a uniquely geometric plan. Many of the city's cultural attractions double as architectural highlights, such as the Parliament House, High Court, and War Memorial. Galleries and museums also dot the Canberra skyline, enriching the city's cultural realm. The legendary host of festivals like the Canberra Writers Festival, the National Folk Festival, and the Floriade, the city is forever abuzz with activity. Nature parks, wineries, acclaimed culinary stalwarts and cultural institutions of national import are all at hand in Canberra.
