Open since 1078, the Elstow Abbey Church of St. Mary and St. Helena serves as the parish church of Bedford. Built into a huge structure, this church once ranked amongst the richest Benedictine nunneries. However, after the 1500s phase of dissolution of monasteries, the church got reduced to its present building though it still serves as a place of Christian worship. Known to be the place of baptism destination of the famous John Bunyan, the Elstow Abbey Church is artistically styled with its Gothic architecture and is a popular attraction for the six column remains of its previous structure. Prayer meetings and services are conducted regularly at this historic and unique place of worship.
