Deventer was once a charter member of the famous Hanseatic League, the affiliation of commercially powerful cities based around the North Sea and the Baltic which helped set the stage for the great northern European Empires of the 18th and 19th Centuries. Deventer was thus in days gone by an economic powerhouse very nearly the rival of Amsterdam or Antwerp. Today, Deventer seem a far cry from those days of commercial import and comes across as rather a sleepy town of meandering canals and snug cobblestone streets. It is as such one of the best-preserved golden age-era cities in the Netherlands, and features numerous churches, shops and restaurants housed in lovely old buildings, as well as charming parks and promenades.
