TOURIST ATTRACTIONS & SIGHTSEEING, PRACTICAL INFORMATION
The town of Tønder, once a Hanseatic city and for many centuries a possession of neighbroing Germany, Tønder actually voted to remain a part of that country in the 19th-century referendum setting the borders of the two lands, but was overruled by its neighbors. In keeping with its reputation as a market town, Tønder is synonymous with trade, especially in fine textiles and above all in the manufacture of its famous lace (known in Denmark and northern Europe as Tønder lace). Though naturally a more meaningful industry in the days when fine fabrics where strictly the stuff of nobility, the town still benefits from the reputation of its wares and even hosts a yearly lace festival. Furthermore, the town is just steps from the border (a walk across and back from the town center would take a mere few hours) and it benefits from the tourist trade and the sale of goods in Euros to travelers from the Eurozone.
